OLDER CATTLE DISPOSAL SCHEME (OCDS) We currently have a few spaces still available for collections in November & December. To be pre-booked we require the eartag numbers of cattle by Tuesday 30th September. IF YOU HAVE ANY MORE ENTRIES FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SCHEME PLEASE CONTACT US AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. The RPA require that all entries for the remainder of the scheme are to be pre-booked by 30th September 2008. The OCDS scheme will cease at the end of 2008 and producers may be liable for disposal costs after this date. To pre-book cattle or for further information relating to collections please contact the Auctioneers. *********************************************** SLAUGHTER ONLY OR “RED” MARKET Entries now requested for the next “Red” Market, the date of which will be fixed in due course. Due to the increasing incidence of TB in the area we will be holding further “Red” Markets for finished cattle and cull cows. The date of the next “Red” Market will be advised once we have sufficient entries forward. We have been informed that the "Red" Market can receive slaughter cattle from TB2 restricted holdings even if the animals have not been tested within 60 days except of course reactors or inconclusive reactors. Buyers have confirmed that with the current shortage of cattle the Market will be well supported. To ensure that buyers are able to make up good size loads of stock we appeal to producers who are under restriction due to TB to pre-enter stock for licensing which is a legal requirement. We can also accept non-TB restricted cattle but they must be sold for slaughter only. Further details from the Auctioneers.
SHEEP EID AND TAGGING Sheep producers should be aware that the UK sheep industry is due to adopt Electronic Identification (EID) for all sheep aged over twelve months born after 1st January 2010. There have been some worrying industry discussions and lobbying for a specific derogation for EID tagging for slaughter only lambs under twelve months old. The National Farmers’ Union have been pushing this derogation very forcefully on the basis of a small cost saving. Auctioneers have grave concerns over the long term viability of this option and feel that it will further reduce the ability of lamb producers within this country to use the live marketing option for their stock and in turn will reduce producers options as far as marketing and transparency are concerned. Chris Dodds, the Secretary of the Livestock Auctioneers’ Association, recently wrote an article for the Farmers Guardian on 4th July 2008. Please click here for a link to this article. ACT
NOW BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE For further information relating to sheep identification and EID or indeed the derogation please do not hesitate to contact either Edd Buckland, Jim Large or Ben Messer-Bennetts. BLUETONGUE DISEASE Cornwall has now been included in the Protection Zone which means that vaccine is available for cattle and sheep. Your vet will have details on the vaccine. This does not affect the marketing of stock or the values of the same. Stock does not need to be vaccinated to come to market. Where it can travel after market may be affected by its vaccine status. The entry forms for Truro Market have been amended to include the dates that stock being entered have been vaccinated. Further details on Bluetongue can be found on the Defra website at www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/diseases or in the Farming Press. *********************************************** SHEEP IDENTIFICATION NEW DOUBLE TAGGING RULES This is a brief summary of the new double tagging rules, particularly insofar as they affect the marketing of sheep. When will double tagging be introduced? On 11th January 2008. Any sheep born on or after that date will have to be tagged according to the new rules. Will double tagging apply to all sheep? Lambs born on or after 11th January 2008 and intended for slaughter in the UK by twelve months of age can still be single tagged. Only animals not intended for slaughter need to be double tagged. What about older animals i.e. hoggets/sheep over twelve months old including cull ewes? All sheep which have already been identified with a UK tag before 11th January 2008 can continue to be identified with a single eartag and do not require any further tags. What about ‘S’ tags – are they still required? ‘S’ tags will no longer be used. If lambs born on or after 11th January 2008 reach twelve months of age will they need to be double tagged? Yes. Any lambs that reach twelve months of age after 11th January 2008 will then have to be double tagged. Must the two tags be identical? Where double tagging is required the identification numbers on the two tags must be identical when first applied and it is advised that one tag should be applied to each ear. The above is only a very brief summary of some of the new rules. Producers should ensure that they are conversant with all of the new rules and fully comply with them. Further information can be obtained from the livestock helpline at RPA on 0845 0509876 or from the Defra website www.defra.gov.uk. The Defra publication on the new rules is entitled ‘Guidance for Keepers in England – Rules for Identifying Sheep and Goats’. NEW
TB PRE-MOVEMENT TESTING RULES
ALL STORE CATTLE WHICH ARE OVER 42 DAYS (6 WEEKS) OLD MUST BE PRE-MOVEMENT TESTED FOR TBTruro
Livestock Market operates a separate exempt section which will be
able to accept tested as well as untested finished cattle and
slaughter cows. Calves which are up to and including 42 days old on the day of sale are also exempt from the regulations as are cattle from 3 and 4 year test holdings. Store
cattle which are under 42 days old on the day of sale are also exempt from
the regulations as are cattle from 3 and 4 year test holdings. Store
cattle which are over 42 days old and are from 1 and 2 year test holdings
must have been tested within 60 days of the sale date. Producers
are required to use new entry forms available from the Auctioneers and to
declare in writing to the Auctioneers the date of testing. Cattle
will not be accepted unless they are presented to the market with an Entry
Form showing a current TB test date. CATTLE ENTRY FORMS AND FARM ASSURANCE Animals will be assumed non-Farm Assured if entry forms do not include stickers or if stickers are not affixed alongside the signature boxes on the passports. Vendors also need to be aware that different Farm Assurance schemes apply to different classes of livestock. The National Dairy Farm Assurance Scheme (NDFAS) only applies to dairy animals over thirty months of age. It does not apply to dairy animals under thirty months or beef cattle. We have had notification from some buyers that these details need to be correct in future or penalties will apply. Farm Assurance continues to be crucial. We have had comments fed to us by one of our buyers of OTM cows and clean cattle that in the near future they are only going to be able to buy Farm Assured stock. This will limit the market for non-Assured stock and we believe will seriously jeopardise producers. It is possible that the current differential of 5–10p/kg may widen if this becomes the case. There are a number of schemes available to producers to gain Assurance and if information or assistance is required please contact Edd Buckland or Bob Mosley. *********************************************** EARTAGS Cows with only one eartag, i.e. born 1st September 1996 to 1st January 1998, are being binned regularly if the vets at the abattoirs decide they are worn and all letters and numbers are not legible. It is therefore recommended that even these older cows are double tagged for ease of reading. *********************************************** FIELDSMAN SERVICE FREE on/off Farm Livestock Advice Service is available.
